The National Youth Outcomes Initiative

The National Youth Outcomes Initiative

Over the past decade, Boys & Girls Clubs of America has emerged as a leader in outcomes measurement in the nation’s youth-serving sector, building the capability of Club organizations to collect and use data to gauge their beneficial effect on young people and demonstrate their impact to their stakeholders.

BGCA continues to enhance NYOI data collection and reporting tools and processes. In addition, BGCA has expanded its internal capacity to conduct more sophisticated data analytics and program evaluation, and is collaborating with well-respected research partners such as the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality and the Partnerships in Education & Resilience Institute at Harvard University. BGCA is building a rich repository of youth outcomes data for a sizeable number of Clubs that spans multiple years. This enables BGCA to analyze longer-term trends for matched cohorts of Club youth, as well as identify the practices employed by the strongest Clubs so that they can be disseminated throughout the Boys & Girls Club Movement.

The Club Experience Indicator and Continuous Quality Improvement

In 2004-05, BGCA partnered with the Search Institute to undertake a comprehensive study to identify core Club practices that foster positive youth development. The research yielded strategies and of practices that were synthesized into the Five Key Elements for Positive Youth Development that are at the center of our Movement’s Formula for Impact theory of change. When implemented together and with consistency, the Club meets the developmental needs of youth by providing:

  1. A safe, positive environment
  2. Access to fun and a sense of belonging
  3. Access to supportive relationships
  4. Meaningful opportunities and expectations
  5. Formal and informal recognition

When BGCA launched NYOI to consistently and credibly measure the Formula for Impact, we sought to find a way to measure youth perception of these key elements for positive youth development. From this, the Club Experience Indicator was developed.
